2025: Santa Ana Pueblo, NMMay 28–30, 2025 · Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort With just over 515 attendees, the 2025 conference was the second-largest Summer Conference to date. The program included more than 75 sessions on topics ranging from climate, energy, and water to land use, environmental justice, and emerging methods. Marshall Burke (Stanford University) gave the keynote lecture, “The Changing Risk and Burden of Wildfire,” and attendees gathered for a stargazing outing at the Sunrise Amphitheater. The local organizing committee came from the University of New Mexico: Robert Berrens, Janie Chermak, Benjamin Jones, Jingjing Wang, Xiaoyang Wang, and Yuting Yang, with Will Wheeler serving as Board liaison. View the 2025 conference program2024: Washington, D.C.May 29–31, 2024 The 2024 conference was AERE’s largest gathering to date, with 570 registered attendees. The EPA’s National Center for Environmental Economics (NCEE) served as the conference organizing committee, including Alex Marten, Bryan Parthum, Elise Breshears, Will Wheeler, and Al McGartland. The program offered 83 concurrent sessions and 325 research paper presentations on energy, climate change and policy, pollution and environmental quality, natural resource management, economic analysis and methodology, and health and human impacts. A plenary session, “America’s Trillion Dollar Climate Investment,” was moderated by Joseph Aldy (Harvard Kennedy School) with panelists Karen Palmer (Resources for the Future), Arik Levinson (Georgetown University and U.S. Department of the Treasury), Lori Bennear (Duke University), and Nat Keohane (Center for Climate and Energy Solutions). Resources Radio, a podcast from Resources for the Future, recorded four episodes at the conference. View the 2024 conference program2023: Portland, MaineMay 31–June 2, 2023 · Holiday Inn By the Bay More than 460 environmental and resource economists from academia, government, and the private sector, along with graduate students, attended the 2023 conference. Limited virtual access was provided for select sessions. The conference opened with a block of parallel sessions, followed by a plenary session, “Forever Chemicals: A Pressing Justice and Policy Issue,” and a welcome reception. The academic program continued on Thursday and Friday and included the annual awards luncheon. View the 2023 conference program2022: Miami, FloridaJune 1–3, 2022 · Hyatt Regency Miami More than 430 environmental and resource economists from academia, government, and the private sector, along with graduate students, attended the 2022 conference, and limited virtual access was provided for select sessions. The conference began with a plenary session on environmental justice research in economics, followed by a welcome reception. The academic program continued on Thursday and Friday and included a keynote address by Rob Mendelsohn. View the 2022 conference program2021: VirtualJune 2–4, 2021 More than 680 registered speakers and participants attended over 65 parallel paper sessions in this virtual conference. Joseph Shapiro gave the keynote address, “The Costs, Benefits, and Incidence of Environmental Policy in the Twenty-first Century,” and AERE held a virtual social gathering and awards ceremony. Presenters and attendees could share audio and video, and meeting rooms stayed open after sessions to extend discussion. The new AERE Lunch Match-up Program randomly paired graduate students with later-career participants for a virtual lunch chat, and it was one of the best-received events of the conference. View the 2021 conference program2020: VirtualJune 3–5, 2020 More than 800 registered speakers and attendees took part in three days of sessions at the 2020 virtual conference. AERE developed the virtual format as a practical response to the COVID-19 crisis, and it encouraged AERE to look for new ways to connect its community over the long run. The original conference organizers were David Kelly and Chris Parmeter (University of Miami), with AERE board members Neha Khanna and Nick Kuminoff and the AERE Headquarters team helping to make the virtual conference possible. View the 2020 program at a glance2019: Incline Village, NevadaMay 30–31, 2019 · Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe The 2019 conference was organized by Maximilian Auffhammer (University of California, Berkeley) and Katrina Jessoe (University of California, Davis). Seema Jayachandran (Northwestern University) gave the keynote address, “Why I’m Excited About the Intersection of Environmental & Development Economics.” A pre-conference workshop on May 29, “Advances in Integrated Assessment Modeling,” was organized by David Anthoff, Elizabeth Koptis, Frances Moore, and Nicholas Muller. The sponsored sessions covered advances in CGE modeling to inform environmental policy and empirical resource economics in fisheries and water resources, with support from the USDA Economic Research Service, the EPA National Center for Environmental Economics, and NOAA’s Office of Response and Restoration. 2017: Pittsburgh, PennsylvaniaMay 31–June 2, 2017 The 2017 conference was organized by co-chairs Karen Clay (Carnegie Mellon University) and Randall Walsh (University of Pittsburgh), with Edson Severnini (Carnegie Mellon University) and Jeremy Weber (University of Pittsburgh). Janet Currie (Princeton University) gave the keynote address, “New Evidence on the Dangers of Low Blood Lead Levels.” A pre-conference workshop on May 31, “New Opportunities for Environmental Measurement,” was organized by Daniel Phaneuf, Catherine Kling, and Yusuke Kuwayama. The sponsored sessions covered emerging data opportunities in environmental and resource economics, shale oil and gas, and sustainability, renewables, and the grid. View the 2017 conference program2016: Breckenridge, ColoradoJune 9–11, 2016 · Beaver Run Resort and Conference Center The fifth annual Summer Conference was organized by co-chairs Harrison Fell (North Carolina State University) and Daniel Kaffine (University of Colorado Boulder). Catherine Wolfram (University of California, Berkeley) gave the keynote address, “Effective Carbon Mitigation Strategies.” The pre-conference workshop, “Big Data in Environmental and Resource Economics,” was led by Matthew Harding (Duke University) and Qing Wu (Google). A special session on June 10 presented the research of two interdisciplinary teams that spent five years estimating the economic losses from the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. View the 2016 conference program2015: San Diego, CaliforniaJune 3–5, 2015 · U.S. Grant Hotel The fourth annual Summer Conference was organized by co-chairs Mary Evans (Claremont McKenna College) and Andrew Plantinga (University of California, Santa Barbara), with Susan Capalbo and Junjie Zhang organizing the poster session. M. Scott Taylor (University of Calgary) gave the keynote address, “The Beginning of the End of the Fossil Fuel Era?” A pre-conference workshop, “Field Experiments: Design, Methods, and Applications,” was led by Meredith Fowlie and Mushfiq Mobarak. 2014: The 5th World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists was held in Istanbul, Turkey2013: Banff, Alberta, CanadaJune 7–8, 2013 · The Banff Centre The third annual Summer Conference was organized by co-chairs Vic Adamowicz (University of Alberta) and Ujjayant Chakravorty (Tufts University), with Carolyn Fischer organizing the sponsored sessions and Brian Murray organizing the graduate student sessions. The conference theme was “Mixing Oil and Water: The Nexus between Energy and Water Resources.” James Salzman (Duke University) gave the keynote address, “Drinking Water: A History.” A pre-conference workshop on June 6, “Recent Advances in Program and Policy Evaluation,” was led by Paul Ferraro and Dan Millimet. View the 2013 conference program2012: Asheville, North CarolinaJune 4–5, 2012 · Grove Park Inn The second annual Summer Conference was organized by co-chairs Don Fullerton (University of Illinois) and Joe Herriges (Iowa State University), with Billy Pizer chairing the sponsored sessions committee and Antonio Bento chairing the graduate student sessions and posters committee. The program gave extra attention to “New Directions in Climate Change Policy and Analysis,” and Robert Pindyck (MIT) gave the keynote address, “The Climate Policy Dilemma.” A half-day post-conference workshop on June 6, “Climate Change Integrated Assessment Modeling,” was led by Thomas Rutherford. View the 2012 conference program2011: Seattle, WashingtonJune 9–10, 2011 · Renaissance Hotel The inaugural Summer Conference marked AERE’s move from the annual Summer Workshop to a full-service annual conference. Organizers Maximilian Auffhammer and Laura Taylor received nearly 600 abstracts, and the program presented more than 270 papers in general, sponsored, and poster sessions for about 350 attendees. View the 2011 conference programWorkshopsPrior to beginning the Summer Conference series in 2011, AERE hosted an annual Summer Workshop that focused on a specific topic in a small-meeting atmosphere. The first AERE Summer Workshop was held in 1985 in Boulder, Colorado. The last Summer Workshop was fittingly held at Resources for the Future in June 2009—the organization that helped launch AERE thirty years earlier in 1979.
